The English as a Second Language Certificate is designed to develop and expand upon students’ abilities to comprehend and utilize the English language. The foci of the program are Grammar, Reading and Vocabulary, Listening and Speaking, Conversation and Writing. Each discipline is provided for Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced levels. Upon completion of each level, students will be assessed in order to determine eligibility for advancement.

Applicants must present:
1. An official high school diploma or an official transcript from each college and university attended.
2. A completed Application for Admission form.

Upon completion of the English as a Second Language, students will be able to successfully:
● Abstract major ideas from a text, even when it contains complex language
● In speaking, ideas are generally well-developed and expressed coherently
● Understand many different ways that speakers use language for purposes other than to
give information
● Heighten their awareness of correct usage of English grammar
● Enlarge their vocabulary throughout a variety of reading passages

Requirement for English as a Second Language
In order to complete the program, a student must:
1. Satisfactorily complete the required courses listed below.
2. Maintain a 2.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
All students are required to take the total of 1,080 clock hours of the courses.
