Local emergency services are available 24/7, so don’t hesitate to call for immediate help in life-threatening situations.

Urgent care centers and mental health hotlines can provide guidance and treatment for non-urgent but necessary medical or emotional support.

Maintaining your well-being during stressful times is just as crucial as handling emergencies. If you’re struggling with anxiety, depression, or emotional stress, don’t be afraid to reach out for support.

Options range from apartments and condominiums to shared houses and student housing, catering to different budgets and lifestyles. Popular neighborhoods for students and young professionals include Westwood, Koreatown, and Silver Lake, each offering unique amenities and community vibes. It’s essential to consider factors like proximity to public transportation, grocery stores, and recreational activities when choosing a location. Regardless of your choice, Los Angeles offers a vibrant living experience that reflects the city’s dynamic culture.

Zillow.com -offers a wide range of listings with photos, 3D tours, and neighborhood details.

TRANSPORTATION

Los Angeles is known for its sprawling layout and heavy traffic, making transportation an essential part of daily life. The city offers various options for getting around, including a public transit system comprised of buses and Metro rail lines, which provide affordable access to many neighborhoods and attractions. Riders can use a TAP card, a reusable smart card that allows easy payment on all Metro services, making it convenient to hop from one mode of transit to another. The Transit app is also widely used by locals, providing real-time updates on bus and rail schedules and helping travelers navigate the city efficiently.

International students in Los Angeles can easily obtain a TAP card for convenient use of the city’s public transit system. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

1. Buy a TAP Card

– At Metro Stations: TAP vending machines are available at most Metro stations. You can purchase a TAP card for $2 and load it with fare or passes at these machines.

– Online: Visit the official TAP website (https://www.taptogo.net/) to order a TAP card and have it shipped to a U.S. address.

– Retail Locations: Many convenience stores, grocery stores, and Metro Customer Centers across Los Angeles sell TAP cards.

2. Student Discounts

International students enrolled in an accredited school or university in LA may qualify for a reduced fare through the Metro student program. To apply for a discounted student TAP card:

Complete an Application: Fill out the student TAP card application online (https://www.taptogo.net/) or download it, complete it, and submit it along with proof of enrollment, such as a school ID or registration.

– Submit Proof: Proof of student status must be verified by the institution. You can submit documentation online or at a Metro Customer Center.

3. Reloading the Card

You can add fare or passes to your TAP card at TAP vending machines, online, through the TAP app, or at participating retail locations.

Using a TAP card helps international students get around LA easily, with access to the Metro buses, rail lines, and even some other transit services across the county.

For those who prefer driving, having a car is often the most convenient way to explore Los Angeles, though parking can be challenging in busier areas. Rideshare services like Uber and Lyft offer a flexible alternative for those without a personal vehicle, providing quick access to nearly any destination. Biking is also becoming increasingly popular, with bike lanes and rental services available in many parts of the city. Whether using public transit, driving, ridesharing, or biking, Los Angeles has numerous ways to explore its vibrant neighborhoods.

HEALTH INSURANCE

Health insurance is a vital component of managing healthcare costs and accessing medical services. It provides financial protection against high medical expenses by covering a portion of the costs for doctor visits, hospital stays, preventive care, and prescription medications. In the U.S., health insurance can be obtained through employers, government programs like Medicaid and Medicare, or purchased individually. Having health insurance not only helps mitigate the financial burden of unexpected medical issues but also promotes regular check-ups and preventative care, ultimately contributing to overall well-being.

Although SCSU does not mandate a specific Health Insurance Provider, here is some Insurance you can consider.

DRIVER LICENSE & REAL ID

To get a driver’s license in Los Angeles, you’ll need to visit a local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office. First, make an appointment online to save time. Bring required documents: Passport, I-20, I-94, and proof of address (it could be bank statement, bill statement, rent agreement, etc.). And, there is application fee you’ll need to pay. You’ll need to pass a written test, a vision exam, and a driving test . It’s also recommended to study the California Driver Handbook to prepare. Once you’ve successfully completed these steps, you’ll receive your California driver’s license, allowing you to drive legally in the state.

Additionally, you can apply for a REAL ID, which is a federally accepted form of identification that will be necessary for domestic flights and accessing federal facilities. To obtain a REAL ID, you’ll need to provide additional documentation, and more specific proofs of residency. Once you’ve completed all the steps and passed the tests, you’ll receive your California driver’s license or REAL ID, allowing you to drive legally in the state.

MOBILE CARRIERS

When arriving in the U.S. as an international student, it’s essential to choose the right mobile carrier to stay connected with friends, family, and the campus community. Major carriers like Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile offer nationwide coverage with a variety of plans, including prepaid options that don’t require long-term contracts, making them ideal for students. T-Mobile is especially popular for international students due to its competitive rates for international calling and texting. Alternatively, smaller carriers like Mint Mobile and Google Fi provide affordable, flexible plans and good coverage. Be sure to compare prices, data limits, and international roaming options to find the plan that suits your needs.

At Southern California State University (SCSU), we understand the importance of staying connected, especially for our international students. That’s why we are excited to offer all newly enrolled students a complimentary Mint Mobile SIM card with one month of free service. Mint Mobile provides affordable plans with excellent coverage, making it a perfect choice for students on the go. This offer includes unlimited talk, text, and data to help you settle into your new environment without worrying about mobile expenses. Simply activate your SIM card upon arrival and enjoy seamless connectivity throughout the U.S.
